Six Generations. One Lineage of Scent.
HuaYuan Incense begins with one family's devotion to he xiang - the art of blending natural incense - passed down through six generations, from the imperial court of Qing-dynasty China to the modern seeker of stillness.
The Beginning: An Imperial Physician
In the late nineteenth century, physician Zhang Yanzhi walked the halls of the Forbidden City. Born into a family of traditional medicine, he entered the palace as a young man and rose through the ranks of the Imperial Medical Bureau. In 1902, when cholera swept through Beijing, he worked alongside the imperial physician Han Daicai, treating the sick with the ancient practice of herbal fumigation - a contribution that earned the trust of the court.
Between 1903 and 1905, Zhang Yanzhi gathered the palace's vast treasury of fragrance knowledge and composed more than thirty-eight imperial incense formulas. Each blend drew on rare natural woods, resins, and botanicals, arranged according to the classical principle of jun chen zuo shi - in which every ingredient plays a defined role, like ministers in service to a sovereign.
His work won the admiration of the Guangxu Emperor and the Empress Dowager, and the formulas became known as the Huayuan lineage of imperial incense. When war came in 1919, the family left Beijing for Jiangsu, carrying their formulas and their craft south - where the tradition was preserved by a single line of inheritance: one master, one successor, generation after generation.
The Sixth Generation: Chen Yuqi
Today the lineage rests in the hands of Chen Yuqi, the sixth-generation inheritor, born in 1986 in Chongqing. He began his study of the art as a young man - pharmacology, blending technique, and the culture of incense - and has devoted more than twenty years to mastering what his family calls the three pillars: to craft, to taste, and to teach.
To craft: to honor the old methods without being bound by them, creating blends that belong to modern life. To taste: to lead people, through systematic tasting, into the layers and rhythm of fine incense. To teach: to train a new generation of he xiang artisans, so the lineage continues.
The Philosophy: Ingredients, Method, Intention
Every HuaYuan blend begins with three commitments:
Ingredients (cai). Only natural materials - agarwood, sandalwood, frankincense, osmanthus, and other rare botanicals - chosen for their character and their affinity with the body.
Method (fa). The traditional techniques of the imperial court, half-handmade and fully handmade, with no chemical additives.
Intention (yi). Fragrance composed not only to smell beautiful, but to quiet the mind and settle the body.
A Different Path: Chinese He Xiang
Chinese incense is a path of harmony. Where some traditions pursue the purity of a single wood, Chinese he xiang composes many materials into a single, layered scent - rich, evolving, and alive from the first light to the last ember. This is the tradition we carry: not the fragrance of one note, but the quiet conversation of many.
